GRAFFITI & ARCHITECTURE
Graffiti and architecture take you through a ‘purple fantasy’ featuring the Leake Street tunnels. The photography series highlights the beautiful pieces depicted around the tunnels in Waterloo. These hazy edits amplify the overwhelming creativity as you go through the tunnels which are also known as the ‘Banksy tunnels’, a space where graffiti is tolerated despite being against the law.
Graffiti and street art can be controversial but also pivotal to how space can be perceived. Graffiti is a way for artists to communicate art to ‘normal’ everyday people; it can inspire and provoke those who engage with it, political graffiti artists like Banksy, Dave the Chimp, Blu and others have successfully done this.
Berlin

Our favourite graffiti scene is definitely Berlin, their street art culture is breathtaking. The dark history of Germany is customary news around the world; the vibrancy that illuminates Berlin is a huge contrast to the calamitous past activities in Germany.
The city has faced many obstacles and unrest.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the people of the city celebrated freedom. As an act of celebration, international artists were invited to paint the wall in 1990, which were not respected by other free expression artists.
Despite the wall being taken down, there is still an ongoing divide in the city, especially against ‘hipsters’ and Berliners as gentrification is pushing these people out of their homes. Graffiti was used as a way to transform areas that lacked German identity and features. There is a gloomy presence in Berlin, however, the graffiti and street art brings life and character to the city.
Nigeria

The city of Lagos is beginning to understand the importance of graffiti and street art culture; #EkoTag was an initiative which celebrated Nigeria at 50, with graffiti artist Osa Seven.
A busy city like Lagos definitely needs more graffiti in the landscape, a place where most of its residents can't afford the luxury of visiting art galleries; it’s important for them to engage in art in one way or the other, especially to inspire young people who might discover their love for it.
