Creative Core

Is your creative work Full-Time or Part-Time?

Part-Time

What does your creative discipline mean to you?

I’ve always enjoyed creating ever since I can remember, through my life I’ve attempted many forms of art whether it’s fashion design, hair braiding or drawing. Even within drawing I’ve always tried to challenge myself by exploring different mediums of art; painting, illustrating, sketching. I feel this desire to constantly create and openness to try new things is what is helping me develop my skills

Where do you draw most of your inspiration from?

Black Women

Who inspires you creatively?

Black Women

How do you cope mentally? How do you make time for self care, a social life/family life too. Do you ever get frustrated and want to quit building something you’re passionate about? How do you overcome these negative/dark emotions.

Since my creative work is only part time along side my education, I find it has been a great way to relax and de stress. Although, I have many frustrations as I always find myself comparing my work to those who do their art full time. I often think where I’d be or how much better I would’ve been if I did take this up full time. However, I tend to over come these thoughts by talking to a friend or channelling the energy into my art.

Race

How has race had an impact on your creativity?

Race has had an impact in the type of art I produce. I mainly draw black women because I want us to be explored and seen more in art. I believe it’s always good to represent yourself, your culture and community in your creative skills if you are able to.

What sort of obstacles have you faced whilst being a black creative?

It’s hard to look for opportunities, naturally they don’t just come to you, it always takes a lot of hardwork and that extra 50% of energy to make yourself known and be taken seriously as a black creative

Advice

What institutions would you suggest for someone starting out to join, one that can help jumpstart their career or give them guidance?

Advice I would give if someone is struggling mentally is to speak to someone, anyone. You can never be a burden and there is always someone willing to help and listen! Do something you find therapeutic.

What advice would you give to someone doing something similar to you?

What advice would you give them if they were struggling mentally?

If you’re looking for guidance, I’d suggest searching for any groups around your area that can help! There are so many people in the same position as you and so many more people who have jumped the hurdle you’re facing and are willing to help.

Where can we find you?
